Modern adoption is all about giving you options. Not only are adoption plans customizable, the decision about which plan lies with the parent. You have the power to decide the kind of life and future you want for yourself and your child.

How Adoption Works

Adoption is a life-changing decision, and it’s essential that you understand how adoption works to ensure you’re making the best decision for you.

To start, it’s important to meet with an adoption counselor who will walk you through the adoption process and the potential implications. If you decide that adoption is right for you, you’ll work with an adoption agency or attorney to create an adoption plan and choose the adoptive family.

Types of Adoption Plans

An adoption plan is essentially a document that outlines your goals for the adoption process. There are three types of adoption plans, and each is customizable.

  • Open Adoption: In an open adoption, you will have direct communication with the adoptive family and child. This can include regular visits, phone calls, emails, and the exchange of photos. Open adoption allows for a continuous relationship, helping the child understand their background and maintain connections with their birth family. It also allows you to be involved in your child’s life.
  • Semi-Open Adoption: Semi-open adoption involves indirect communication facilitated by an adoption agency or attorney. You and the adoptive family may exchange letters, photos, or updates without direct contact. This plan provides some level of connection with the adoptive family and child while maintaining privacy.
  • Closed Adoption: In a closed adoption, there is no contact between the birth parents and the adoptive family after the adoption is finalized. All identifying information is kept confidential, and the child’s birth records are sealed. Closed adoption is chosen for various reasons, including privacy or security concerns, although this type of adoption is rare today.
