Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant is overwhelming. But in the midst of this overwhelm, does even a little part of you want to parent? If so, you owe it to yourself to fully explore this option. Some questions you might be asking:

Do I Have What It Takes To Be A Parent?

Feeling too young, not financially stable, and lacking a support system are common reasons that many women feel like parenting isn’t an option.

However, it’s important to know that circumstances change. By taking small steps in the right direction, you can get to where you want to be. If you want to parent, don’t let your current circumstances hold you back from pursuing this option. Circumstances change, but choosing to parent is forever.

When thinking about whether parenting is right for you, asking yourself the following questions can help:

  • What might my life look like if I choose to parent?
  • How might I feel if I choose not to parent?
  • What steps can I take right now to get to where I want to be?

Parenting In School

Are you still in school? If so, you’re likely wondering how it’s possible to finish school while parenting. But it’s important to know that it is possible.

In fact, there is a federal civil rights law that’s in place to protect your rights as a pregnant student. According to Title IX, you are entitled to:

  • Excused extended absences for pregnancy-related appointments, etc.
  • Reasonable accommodations, like larger desks, elevator access, and more
  • Protection from harassment

If you are pregnant and in school, it’s important to talk to your guidance counselor as soon as possible to ensure your rights are protected and that you have access to what you need to succeed.
